Fiqh
Fiqh 101 (part 2)
Having covered salah in the first part of the course, in this part, we hope to deal with the other three pillars of Islam, namely, zakah, siyaam and hajj. We begin the study with zakah addressing the following questions: What is the status of zakah in Islam? Who is eligible to pay it? How do we calculate it? When is it due? Who is eligible to receive it? The course will continue, on the same lines, with siyaam and hajj, in order to delineate the essential fiqh relating to them.

Hijra and the Early Madinan Period
NO CLASS ON APRIL 11 (Continuing from the last semester, this class focuses on the Hijra and the Early Madinan Period.) Fourteen centuries ago, thousands of miles away and a totally different milieu how can the Life of God's last Messenger still resonate with the millions of Muslims living in the 21st century? How do the simple actions and sayings find expression in the modern world? How can Muslims, and non-Muslims, understand the socio-political realities of seventh-century Arabia with its tribal customs to fully appreciate the transformation of simple men and women into leaders of a new civilization? What lessons from the Prophet's life can modern Muslims and non-Muslims glean to make our own world a truly better place?
